Meaningful Travel

Many volunteer organisations. One place to find, compare and book a meaningful project.

How Filari designed, built and maintains Meaningful Travel's marketplace, where independent volunteer and travel organisations list their projects, and volunteers search, compare, book and pay in one place.

Problem
Volunteers had to hop between many small organisations' sites to compare projects, each with its own form and payment.
Solution
One marketplace: trip search, booking, multi-currency payments, traveller accounts, CRM, admin and a CMS for every company.
Result
A growing marketplace on a platform Filari built and continues to maintain and extend.
The challenge

A volunteer marketplace has two customers: the volunteer and the organisation running the project

Meaningful Travel is not a single operator. Many independent volunteer and travel organisations list projects on it, in the same way volunteer marketplaces work.

Filari has worked with the business across more than one generation of the platform: an earlier platform first, and the current website today. Both were built to keep the traveller side simple and the company side under control.

Customer 1

The volunteer

Wants one place to compare causes, countries, dates and prices, and to book with confidence.

Customer 2

The organisation

Wants its projects shown well, its bookings sent to it and its money handled correctly.

Running a travel marketplace? These may sound familiar

  1. 01Each partner sends trip details in a different format.
  2. 02Travellers pay in many currencies, and bookings must reach the right company.
  3. 03Leads and bookings live in emails instead of a CRM.
  4. 04Adding a new partner or trip needs a developer.
The live marketplace

From search to deposit in four screens

A volunteer lands on the homepage, narrows to a country, compares programs from different organisations, and applies with a live price and online deposit. Hover over a screen to scroll through the full page.

What we built

Nine parts of one travel marketplace

01

Project search across organisations

Compare causes in one place

Volunteers filter every listed project by country, cause, duration, start date and budget, whichever organisation runs it.

02

Booking flow

From trip page to confirmed seat

Choose dates, add travellers and confirm, with the booking routed to the organisation that runs the project.

03

Multi-currency payments

Pay the way you live

Prices shown and paid in the traveller's currency, with each payment tied to its booking and company.

04

Traveller My Account

Everything before departure

Bookings, payments, documents and trip details in one login.

05

CRM and lead automation

No enquiry left in an inbox

Enquiries and bookings go into the CRM with follow-ups triggered automatically.

06

Admin and operations

One view of every booking

The team sees bookings, payments and trip dates across all companies, and manages partners from one screen.

07

CMS for trips and pages

New trips without a developer

Trips, dates, prices and content are managed in the admin and published straight to search.

08

SEO and performance

Found for the trips people search

Each trip and destination has a fast, well-structured page that search engines can read.

09

Hosting and maintenance

One long-term tech partner

Filari hosts, secures, updates and extends the platform as the marketplace grows.

How it works

Two sides, one platform in the middle

A marketplace only works when both sides get what they came for. Volunteers want choice, honest information and a safe way to pay. Organisations want to reach the right people and get bookings without extra admin. The platform sits between them and does the work in the middle.

For volunteers and travellers

Find, trust, book

  • Search every project by country, cause, dates and budget
  • Read full project pages: tasks, stay, food, safety, what is included
  • See clear prices in their own currency
  • Apply and pay a deposit online
  • Manage bookings, documents and payments in My Account

For organisations

List, receive, manage

  • Publish projects, dates, prices and photos through the CMS
  • Receive bookings with volunteer details, automatically
  • See which payments are in and what is due
  • Keep project pages current without a developer
  • Reach volunteers they could not reach alone
The volunteer journey

Seven steps from first search to coming home

Every step lives on the same platform, so nothing is lost between a search, an email and a spreadsheet.

Built on Drupal

Why Filari chose Drupal for a content-heavy marketplace

A volunteer marketplace is mostly structured content: organisations, projects, countries, causes, dates, prices, reviews and pages. Drupal is built for exactly that. Its content types, fields, taxonomy and user roles let Filari model the whole marketplace cleanly, then add custom modules for booking, payments, CRM sync and automation.

Structured content

Organisations, projects, countries, causes and pages are Drupal content types with fields, so every project page follows the same clear layout.

Taxonomy-driven search

Countries, causes, durations and age groups are taxonomy terms, which power fast filters and search-friendly listing pages.

Roles and permissions

Volunteers, organisations, editors and admins each see only what they need, using Drupal's role system.

Custom booking and payments

Custom modules handle booking, deposits, balances and multi-currency pricing on top of Drupal's core.

CRM and email sync

Enquiries, bookings and payments are pushed to the CRM and trigger the right email at each stage.

Performance and caching

Drupal caching and optimised pages keep project listings fast, even with many organisations and projects.

Money, trust and operations

The parts volunteers never see, and cannot do without

Multi-currency payments

Volunteers see and pay prices in their own currency. Each payment stays tied to its booking and to the organisation that runs the project.

Trust on every project page

Clear information builds confidence before anyone pays.

  • What volunteers do day to day
  • Where they stay and what they eat
  • What the fee includes and excludes
  • Organisation profile and past volunteer feedback

Admin and ERP

One back office for the whole marketplace.

  • Bookings by organisation, country and date
  • Payment status and balances due
  • Organisation onboarding and approval
  • Content review before projects go live

CRM and lead automation

No enquiry sits unanswered in an inbox. Leads are captured, tagged and followed up automatically, and the team sees each volunteer's stage.

Automated messages

Confirmations, payment reminders, pre-departure information and organisation alerts go out at the right time, without anyone pressing send.

SEO that brings volunteers in

Every project, country and cause has its own fast, well-structured page, so people searching for a specific volunteer trip land on the right one.

FAQ

Questions about travel marketplace platforms

It is one website where many travel companies list their trips, and travellers search, compare and book them in one place. Meaningful Travel works this way: each company manages its own trips, while travellers get one search, one checkout and one account.

Each company gets its own access to add trips, dates, prices and details. The marketplace team reviews and publishes them, and every trip appears in the same search and booking flow.

Yes. Meaningful Travel's platform shows prices and takes payment in the traveller's currency, and the admin keeps each booking linked to the company that runs the trip.

Yes. Filari built the platform in parts that can be extended, and continues to maintain it, so new features can be added without rebuilding what already works.
