How Vignan's Online runs online degrees on one Moodle LMS, built for weekend learners and exams people trust

Vignan's Online offers UGC-entitled MBA, MCA, BBA and BCA degrees to working professionals. The degrees had to be as credible online as on campus. Filari gave every course the same four-quadrant structure, made classes available after they air, and connected proctored exams and assignments to one gradebook.

Problem

Every course had to follow the same structure and every exam had to be credible, for learners who study after work.

Solution

One four-quadrant course template, live and recorded classes together, proctored online exams and one gradebook.

Result

One platform for every online programme, from first lesson to final grade.

The challenge

An online degree is only as credible as the course behind it and the exam at the end

In online higher education, credibility is the product. Vignan's Foundation for Science, Technology & Research, a NAAC A+ deemed-to-be university in Guntur, offers UGC-entitled online degrees through Vignan's Online. Filari built its Moodle LMS for online degrees so that every course follows the same four-quadrant structure, working professionals can learn at weekends and on their phones, and assignments and proctored exams flow into one gradebook.

Vignan's Online teaches people who already have jobs. They study in the evening and at weekends, often on a phone. Because the online degree is equivalent to the campus one, the exams have to be as trustworthy online as they are in a hall.

01

Every course needed the same structure, but faculty build courses differently.

02

Learners miss live sessions because of work, so every class had to be available afterwards.

03

Exams taken at home had to be proctored, timed and graded the same way for everyone.

What Vignan's Online wanted

  • One course structure for every subject
  • Live and recorded learning in one place
  • Credible online exams
  • Marks that flow to results without re-typing
How a course is built

One template, four quadrants, every subject

Each unit of every course is built from the same four parts. Scroll to see the template come together.

QUADRANT 1

e-Tutorial

Weekend live classes are joined from the unit page, and each recording goes back into the same unit. Video lectures sit beside them, so a learner who missed Saturday can catch up on Sunday.

QUADRANT 2

e-Content

Reading material, slides, e-books and case studies for the unit, in one list, in the order faculty want them read.

QUADRANT 3

Discussion forum

Every course has a forum where learners ask questions and faculty answer, so one answer helps the whole batch.

QUADRANT 4

Self-assessment

Unit quizzes, practice tests and assignments let learners check what they know before the exam, with marks and feedback in the course.

Exam integrity

Exams that are as fair online as they are in a hall

Every paper is drawn at random from a question bank, timed, attempted once and proctored. Objective answers are marked automatically; written answers are marked by faculty. Both land in the same gradebook.

What we built

Eight parts of the Vignan's Online LMS

01

One course template for every subject

Same structure, whoever teaches

Each course opens with the same units, and each unit carries the four quadrants. Faculty fill in content; the structure stays fixed.

02

Weekend live classes inside the course

No hunting for links

Live sessions are scheduled and joined from the course page, and recordings are added back to the same unit.

03

Proctored online exams

Exams learners and employers can trust

Timed quizzes with randomised questions from a question bank, one attempt, and online proctoring during the exam.

04

Assignments with rubrics

Fair, consistent marking

Learners upload work before a deadline; faculty mark against a rubric and leave feedback in the same place.

05

Gradebook to results

No re-typing marks

Internal assessments and exam scores land in one gradebook with set weightings, ready to export for results.

06

Progress you can see

Learners know what is left

Activity completion ticks and a course progress bar show each learner what they have finished and what is next.

07

Learn on the phone

Study on the commute

The LMS works in a mobile browser and the Moodle app, so videos, readings and quizzes go wherever the learner goes.

08

Roles for every team

Each person sees their part

Learners, faculty, programme coordinators and administrators each get their own permissions and views.

Inside the build

Three decisions behind credible online degrees

We chose

One four-quadrant template for every unit

Over

Letting each faculty member structure courses their own way

Because

Learners find the same parts in the same place in every subject, and new courses start from the template.

We chose

Recordings added back to the same unit

Over

Live classes only

Because

Working professionals miss sessions because of work. Every class stays available where it belongs.

We chose

Timed, randomised, single-attempt papers with proctoring

Over

Open quizzes taken at home

Because

An online degree is equivalent to the campus one, so the exam has to be as fair online as in a hall.

What we learned

For online degrees, the LMS has two jobs: make every course predictable for a busy learner, and make every exam defensible to the university. A fixed course template solved the first. Treating the exam as one chain, from question bank to gradebook, solved the second.

The results

Every course the same, every exam in one gradebook

Vignan's Online runs its online programmes on one platform. Every course looks and works the same, every class can be watched later, and every exam and assignment ends up in one gradebook.

One structure for every course

Each unit is built from the same four quadrants.

Classes available afterwards

Recordings return to the unit they belong to.

Exams graded the same way

Timed, randomised, single-attempt papers for everyone.

Marks in one place

Assignments and exams land in one gradebook with set weightings.

FAQ

Questions universities ask about an online-degree LMS

The four-quadrant approach organises each unit into e-tutorials, e-content, a discussion forum and self-assessment. Vignan's Online uses one Moodle course template built on these four parts, so every subject has the same structure regardless of who teaches it.

Yes. Moodle's quiz tool supports timed, randomised exams from a question bank, and it can be connected to an online proctoring service that monitors the learner during the attempt. Vignan's Online uses this setup for its online examinations.

On Vignan's Online, every weekend live class is joined from the course page and its recording is added back to the same unit. Learners who miss a session can watch it later next to the notes and quizzes for that topic.

Assignments and exams feed one Moodle gradebook with set weightings for each component. Faculty and coordinators review the combined marks in one place and export them for result processing instead of re-typing them.

Yes. The Vignan's Online LMS works in a mobile browser and in the Moodle app, so learners can watch lessons, read material, post in forums and take practice quizzes on their phones.

Moodle is open source, widely used by universities, and has built-in tools for courses, quizzes, assignments, forums, grading and roles. That lets a university like Vignan's shape the platform around its own academic rules instead of a vendor's.
